"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have also petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos often feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words track endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
